Balancing local budgets is difficult in these hard economic times. But this American Person is wondering if the politicians aren't taking the wrong approach. Today, I heard that our local transit district will potentially cut 50% of the bus routes due to budget problems. 50 percent! Does this make sense?
We want to get people back to work to strengthen the economy, but we take away the very infrastructure that they need to do that!? Where is any sort of strategic thinking going into this process? It's the politicians who have gotten us into this mess in the first place. In good times, they all rob these budgets to do things they want, leaving the districts to fend for themselves. Then, because of poor fiscal discipline, when difficult times come, this is the result.
It's indicative of the politician's thinking -- what can I do to get re-elected NOW!
